Project Title: Adaptive Tuned Vibration Neutraliser

Carl Howard

As part of a DSTO Capability Technology Demonstrator program, an adaptive tuned vibration neutralizer (sometimes called an adaptive tuned mass damper) was developed for application on the Collins Class submarines. The technology was successfully developed and demonstrated to meet all the required target performance measures.

The adaptive tuned vibration neutraliser is capable of providing significant vibration attenuation of tonal vibrations, and the control system will automatically tune the system to changes in the frequency of the disturbing vibration.

This technology can be easily adapted to other systems that require vibration attenuation.

The attractive feature of this adaptive-passive technology is that it does not require power amplifiers, or vibration actuators to continually operate in order to provide vibration attenuation. As the technology is essentially passive, it is extremely reliable and there is no possibility of 'feed-back' where the vibration levels could be made worse, which can occur when active vibration control systems become unstable.
