Project Title: Advanced actuator technologies for automotive mirror control

Mike Kidner and Ben Cazzolato

This project is part of a collaboration between Shefenacker Vision Australia, Uni SA, Wollongong University and the University of Adelaide. The objective is to develop a new actuator mechanism for vibration and position control of mirrors for automotive applications. The focus of the work is to enhance ultrasonic motors, USM, (as used by Canon for control of a zoom lenses). The motor is controlled using a dSpace platform. The operational principle is clearly explain at JPL's USM page. The project involves finite element modelling of the motor vibration mode shapes, the nonlinear contact interaction and the coupled electric and structural fields in the piezo crystal. General info on piezoelectricity can be found here.
